Construction Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)


People often ask, "Can I have a Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) for construction?" "A document that covers everything?"  The answer is not really. Well you could create a document that covers most areas of construction, but it would be hundreds of pages long and would contain more items that did not apply to your project, than items that did.

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) must:

  1. identify the work that is high risk construction work; and
  2. specify hazards relating to the high risk construction work and risks to health and safety associated with those hazards; and
  3. describe the measures to be implemented to control the risks; and
  4. describe how the control measures are to be implemented, monitored and reviewed
  5. be prepared taking into account all relevant matters including
    1. circumstances at the workplace that may affect the way in which the high risk construction work is carried out
    2. if the high risk construction work is carried out in connection with a construction project—the WHS management plan that has been prepared for the workplace; and
    3. be set out and expressed in a way that is readily accessible and understandable to persons who use it


The steps in undertaking each of these tasks are very different. Not only are the steps different, but the potential hazards and the hazard control measures are very different as well.
