What is a toolbox meeting?

Toolbox meetings are generally conducted at the job site prior to the commencement of a job or work shift. Meetings are normally short and cover topics such as work-related workplace hazards, and safe work practices.

A toolbox meeting is a very effective methods to refresh workers’ knowledge, cover last minute safety checks, and exchange information with the experienced workers and supervisors.

Daily prestart or toolbox meetings
These will usually talk about the specific tasks for the day, specific hazards for the task and ensure everyone understands the control measures. This is a time to make everyone involved, aware of other activities that me be undertaken in your surrounding work areas, and associated hazards and control measures.

Discussion should include discussion on the safety issues including environment, hazards, use of personnel protective equipment, first aid and medical support and emergency procedures. This is a time to discuss any workplace incidents and how they may have been avoided.

Weekly or periodic Toolbox Meetings
These are normally longer than a daily prestart/ toolbox meeting. Where these meeting will usually cover the same topics as a daily meeting, this is usually a time to expand on General safe procedures, safety Alerts, and add value on how to safely perform the job to participants.
